Path of Exile 2: A Skill Gem System Overhaul

Jun-03-2024 PST

Since its initial closed beta, Path of Exile has captivated players with its innovative skill system. Unlike other action RPGs, skills in Path of Exile are stored in alterable tradable items called skill gems, giving them immense potential and value. These gems can be modified and improved through support gems, which add various effects and enhancements. This unique approach to skills has been a core feature of the game for the past 12 years, even with the introduction of numerous new skills and ways to use them. However, with the upcoming release of Path of Exile 2, the game's most significant expansion to date, the skill system is set to undergo a substantial overhaul.

In the current version of Path of Exile, skills are stored in skill gems, which can be socketed into equipped gear. The sockets and gems have specific colors, and to activate a skill gem, it must match the color of the socket it's placed in. Support gems can be linked to skill gems, enhancing their effects. However, this system can be confusing and clunky, especially when swapping or upgrading gear. In Path of Exile 2, this system will be revamped to provide a more streamlined and intuitive experience.

One of the major changes in the skill gem system is the removal of socket linking. Instead of linking sockets on gear, skill gems in Path of Exile 2 will come with pre-linked sockets. Additionally, gear will have up to five additional sockets that are already linked to the skill gem. This means players no longer have to spend time linking sockets and can focus on finding linked gems themselves. Furthermore, the new gem screen interface will provide greater clarity on the skills and support gems affecting each other, making it easier for players to understand and optimize their builds.

The revamped skill gem system also introduces new possibilities for character customization. Previously, the number of six-linked skill gems a character could have was limited by the type of weapon they wielded. In Path of Exile 2, every character will have the same maximum number of six-linked skill gems, leveling the playing field and allowing for more diverse and flexible builds. However, this change may come with sweeping adjustments to existing skills, which could be met with mixed reactions from the player base.

While the new system brings exciting improvements, there are also concerns and questions that need addressing. The advantage of two-handed weapons, which previously allowed for the use of two six-linked skill gems, may need to be reevaluated. The transition to the new system might also be initially challenging for long-time players accustomed to the old gem mechanics. Additionally, the migration of old skill gems and gear with socket links is still unclear and will require further clarification.

Despite these concerns, the skill gem system overhaul in Path of Exile 2 promises to be a massive improvement for both veteran and new players. The streamlined interface, simplified upgrading process, and increased flexibility in character builds are sure to reinvigorate the community. Grinding Gear Games' solution to the complexity of the skill gem system will attract more players to the game and enhance the overall experience.

As Path of Exile 2 approaches its release, players can look forward to a more streamlined leveling and item-swapping process, a new class of items with predetermined sockets, and a wider array of upgradeable skills. Additionally, the introduction of new skills and support gems, such as the werewolf skill gem, will bring fresh gameplay possibilities. The anticipation for Path of Exile 2 is high, and players eagerly await its arrival to delve into the revamped skill gem system and embark on new adventures in the world of Wraeclast.
